Clay extraction for roof tile manufacture
The existing roof tile factory had some consented reserves, the exploitation of which would have required the excavation and recording of archaeological remains. The client was seeking a larger quantity of permitted reserves in order to ensure the longevity of the factory operations and in order to justify an intended increase in the output.
The resource had been proven through a drilling programme and the Environmental Impact Assessment was scoped narrowly because the type and quantum of operations were largely unchanged from the current operations. The impacts on the nearby Special Protection Area had to be considered and the use of the proposed site as both breeding and foraging for SPA species was established.
Following the conclusion that the relevant species would not be materially affected planning permission was granted for 80 years of extraction subject to 21 planning conditions and no requirement for a S.106 agreement.
