Clay Cross Coal Extraction
Planning permission had been granted by the District Council for the development of the former pipe-spinning works at Clay Cross for residential purposes. The site had been in industrial use for over a hundred years and there were elements of contamination that needed to be cleared up through the agreed remediation programme.
The client was seeking to fund the remediation programme through the opencast extraction of shallow coal resources that had been intermittently worked by the previous occupants of the site. The main concern from the local population was the impact of traffic removing the coal from the site.
In project terms the successful integration of the extraction operations with the remediation operations allowed a cost-effective solution to be found that provided a final profile that was entirely suitable for the residential development.
